Plethora of Fruit - Raw Foods Diet: Day 21

Raw Foods Diet: Day 21
Well, I am three weeks in! You know what that means… charts and data analysis! Whoopee!

I have certainly learned a lot while on this diet. Not only about raw, living, or whole foods, but also about myself. I have made a few mistakes, and frankly, I’m glad I did. That is how you learn, by making mistakes. There were some definite ups and downs, and frankly, I don’t know whether or not I will continue this diet. One thing I do know, is that the way I look at, and value, nutrition, has changed forever.

Mind
Today was an off day for the mind, and the body. I did recall some dreams, but I didn’t write any of them down.

Body
Weight Chart for Weeks 1, 2, and 3

Trend? – Yes. A troubling one. I need to take a more proactive approach to not losing so much weight. I do know a lot is water weight, but regardless, it is something I need to avoid. A good example of lost water weight is in the big drops. Losing 2 pounds in one day, would mean I would have to burn 7,000 more calories than I consume. I don’t think so. I’m guessing almost all of that was a loss in water weight.
Week 3 High – Day 15 at 158.4 pounds.
Week 3 Low – Day 21 at 154.8 pounds.
Total Change in Three Weeks: - 11.2 pounds.

Blood Pressure-Systolic Chart for Weeks 1, 2, and 3

Trend? – There finally seems to be one. This last week my systolic blood pressure has remained very constant. It is in quite the contrast to the two previous weeks. Very interesting.
Week 3 High – Days 16 and 17 at 101.
Week 3 Low – Day 21 at 98.
Total Change in Three Weeks: - 23.

Blood Pressure-Diastolic Chart for Weeks 1, 2, and 3

Trend? – No, not really. I can’t make any sense out of this data, which probably means that it is pretty inconsequential.
Week 3 High – Days 16, 17, and 18 at 74.
Week 3 Low – Days 15, 20, and 21 at 68.
Total Change in Three Weeks: - 10.

Temperature Chart for Weeks 1, 2, and 3

Trend? – There was at first, but a dramatic increase interrupted that. It did stay lower than normal for awhile, but definitely didn’t hit the low that Week 2 did.
Week 3 High – Day 19 at 98.0 degrees Fahrenheit.
Week 3 Low – Days 17 and 18 at 97.0 degrees Fahrenheit.
Total Change in Three Weeks: + 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Resting Heart Rate Chart for Weeks 1, 2, and 3

Trend? – I would say so. The trend here seems to be that it is going down, and stabilizing. I have been experimenting with playing some classical music while in bed to see if this has any effects, and while too early to tell, I am getting some low readings. Interesting.
Week 3 High – Day 16 at 61 beats per minute.
Week 3 Low – Day 21 at 53 beats per minute.
Total Change in Three Weeks: - 15 beats per minute.

  • Weight: – 154.8 +/-: -1.0 today/-11.2 total
  • Blood Pressure: – 98/68 +/-: -2/0 today/-23/-10 total
  • Body Temperature: – 97.5 +/-: 0 today/+0.5 total
  • Resting Heart Rate: – 53 +/-: -1 today/-15 total
  • Food Eaten

    Meal 1
    2 bananas
A smoothie consisting of: 2 bananas, 2 handfuls of baby spinach.
A smoothie consisting of: 2 bananas, 2 handfuls of baby spinach.

    Meal 2
100g of baby spinach, 4 frozen bananas. This time I weighed it and BOY is that a lot of spinach. One heaping plate worth basically. Still, the smoothie has no real taste of spinach in it. Amazing!

    Meal 3
A smoothie consisting of: 1 thick pineapple slice, 2 oranges, 4 bananas, and 4 strawberries.

    Overall
I will soon begin counting calories and macro nutrient ratios. I know that I originally said that I wouldn’t, but I fear that this is contributing to my weight loss problem. I am just loosing too much weight. It has gotten to the point where I don’t workout as intensely, because I fear I will lose even more weight.

It reminds me of this movie I once saw called Thinner. Here is a brief synopsis.

A man runs over an old gypsy woman. Her husband touches his face and whispers “thinner” as some kind of curse. Soon the man, who was VERY overweight, is losing more than 40 pounds a week and he can’t stop.

Unfortunately, I didn’t even run over any gypsy women! I don’t even have a car!

Wow! I’m impressed with your results. I have been trying an all fruit diet the last couple weeks, I feel terrible at present but have been assured this will pass. I’ve been vegan for 5 years and somehow thought this transistion would be easier. I love your blog and will keep coming back. Keep the faith!!

      ladymacbeth,

      Thanks for the comment!!

What I find very coincidental is the fact that I just told someone about that one saying “this too shall pass.” In trying times, I use it almost like a mantra.

I jumped right into this diet, without any real transition at all, and that probably describes my down days. Overall, I have been very pleased. Perhaps I just have uncovered a sweet tooth and this fully satisfies my cravings.

Part of me wants to try what being a vegan is like, while the other part wants to keep on trucking even after the 30 days!

You might have found it so difficult because of the lack of veggies in your diet. Are you trying a raw foods diet or a fruitarian one?

    3. ladymacbeth Says:

Your question about veggies is exactly the problem. I have never been a fruit eater really, always prefer vegtables. Cooked vegtables at that. The fruit is getting a little easier to get down but I’m missing spinach. I like the ethical idea of eating foods that are so readily given, the lack of violence, even to plants, seems like something to strive for. Not to mention all the potential health benefits and positive feelings, if I ever get through this detox phase. (At least that’s what I’ve been told) I haven’t been though your earlier blogs yet, but I’m guessing you may have been dealing with some of this as well. You have very successfully made a huge diet leap. I hope you do stay with it, its got to be the way to go. Peace and hugs.

I hope you decide to continue, especially since you have gone so far. What an admirable achievement; it will be so fine to see you succeed.

I can’t believe how close you are. I’m so proud of you!!

      ladymacbeth,

Some really fascinating comments so far. It’s stuff like this that keeps me going, that keeps me blogging about it. That is what is so great about blogging, as it is really like a conversation.

I agree, the ethics behind a fruitarian diet are very pure. It is probably the most compassionate of all the diets, just because you don’t kill a thing. Be it plant or animal. However, I am not convinced you get enough nutrients on fruit alone.

What sort of detoxification symptoms have you had thus far? My most obvious was when I got a canker sore.

What made you decide to go this route? Are you willing to try adding in some vegetables, or is it strictly fruit-only?

      James,

Thanks! I can see the end in sight…

      Rebecca,

Thanks! I love all this positivity!!

so if you feel that a majority of your lost weight is a result of losing water weight, then what are you worried about? Retaining water has been attributed to signs of stress and losing that water is then said to be a sign of becoming less stressed. also, i would be willing to wager that the cramping that you got while running was a result of having so much water weight. that much more water was causeing your muscles and flesh to move around that much more causing more cramping versus now there is less jiggle, and so your muscles can stay taught easier and so less cramps. I would still like to see if this loss of weight was also from fat or muscle in addition to water. if it was fat, and you can retain your muscle, then again, I think that is a positive thing to be looking at. as you mentioned though, losing 2 pounds in a day without doing to workout to burn 7000 calories cannot be from your body mass.
With only one week left, it will be easier to count calories, and perhaps you will learn something very interesting in doing so. Good luck with the last week man!

    8. Chris Says:

      Giant,

Interesting analysis. I do not feel it was from stress, I merely feel it was from a diet where I didn’t have enough control over the amounts I was eating. This is what caused the rapid weight, not muscle or fat, loss.

Also, while the cramping may be true, I always seem to cramp up when I push myself harder than I have before. I’m not too sure if there is a correlation there between water intake, but if I was dehydrated, I certainly would cramp regardless of intensity.

      Thanks!
