Raw Foods Diet: Day 8
I went to bed late, as was my goal, to see if I felt any different. I woke up around 5 AM and started my day. It was more normal as I wasn’t the only one walking around, but I did miss having the workout room to myself. I used to be able to turn the TVs on to the Blues music channel and rock out, but now everyone else just watches the news. Yikes.
Mind
No dreams remembered, but I had a great writing session. I decided to do my morning page in the sauna they have here! It was pretty intense, and the cap of my water bottle actually ended up shooting off and hitting me in the shoulder providing for quite the scare. I also listened to Disc 1 of Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth. Overall, I felt very focused today and got a lot done.
Body
Food Eaten
I ended up falling asleep before I had planned, so I didn’t get my last meal in. Oh well, my body obviously needed sleep more!
Meal 1
2 bananas, 1 orange, and a smoothie consisting of: 3 bananas, 2 handfuls of spinach, 1 orange, and 4 strawberries – It was as if a God from the heavens reached down and gave me divine inspiration for the holiest of smoothies.
Meal 2
1 banana and 1 orange
Meal 3
A smoothie consisting of: 2 bananas, 1 orange, and 1 handful of spinach.
Meal 4
3 bananas
Overall
I’ve actually developed a cold sore on the inside of my upper lip that is a little annoying. Could it be the sign of a weakened immune system, the cold weather, or just an expected detoxification symptom? I’m not sure, but I’d love if it just went away. Also, I got back to my strength training routine and I haven’t noticed any drop offs yet. This will be an important thing to keep watch of, as any signs of protein deficiency should dramatically lower my strength.
It was definitely a good day. I didn’t tire out until pretty late, even though I was laying out on the couch listening to an audio book for about an hour. Not too shabby. My definition of the word “late” is taking on an entirely new form. I can’t believe I call like 7:30 “late”.

Great post! I love the quote in the beginning. It reminds me of another Vonnegut novel within a novel. it’s actually a short scifi story from his alter ego, Kilgore Trout. It’s about a planet where produce is extinct, and porn is actually pictures of peaches, and prostitutes are used for describing long leaves of lettuce, and juicy pears. Sounds like the sauna is a great place to think!

These have been all very interesting entries. I have always been interested in these sorts of controlled experiments. Especially, when updates come on a daily basis
I am wondering: have you done an acid/alkaline ratio? I think you can buy a box of PH strips at a pharmacy . They turn a specific color when applied to urine. A color scale will indicate how acidic or alkaline your body is, at that particular time. Of course, during the day your acid balance can change quite a bit. So it’s best to take several readings, at regular intervals. That helps get a really accurate reading.
Also, it’s the thyroid that helps regulate body temperature. Perhaps your thyroid was under-active, and the low body temp. was a symptom. Thus, your diet is helping re-balance the thyroid. That could explain the subsequent rise in the temp. #’s It’s just a suggestion.
Keep up the good work. I will be looking forward to the future posts.

Rebecca,
Are you saying you relate poetry to porn?
Mad Dog,
Thanks for the compliment. In the realm of nutrition science, it is my opinion that the whole double-blind, placebo-controlled, experiments don’t even do enough justice to each theory.
The reason for this is that there are just too many factors, and many things are completely individual. One way or another, I am going to find out the perfect balance for my own body.
Regarding the acid/alkaline ratio, yes, I have. In the Lab Testing post, I mentioned that I had ordered a urinalysis. I got that done, and that includes the pH of your urine.
Interesting theory on the temperature, that very well could be. I can’t say for sure. It could also be because I have been very active, and have been eating more, therefore an increase in metabolism perhaps. However, many raw foodists claim your body temperature will run cooler, but maybe that is something that happens long term.

Nonsense!
Science is science. Most people do not have the luxury of time to conduct a detailed experiment on themselves.
If you consider the possibility of billions of different human reactions to any test, you simply have to come to an excepted, international testing procedure, for any theory. Like it or not, double blind, placebo experiments are the best way humans have come up with so far. Granted, a lot of these tests just happen to be funded by the very companies that are trying to bring these drugs to the public(am I being too cynical?)
Testing for an under-active thyroid is relatively simple, low tech. & cheap. All you need is a thermometer, and 10 days. Here’s what you do: everyday upon awakening place the thermometer under your arm pit for 10 mins., record the resulting reading, after ten days, if the reading is consistently below 98.6, you can bet you have a under-active thyroid.

Mad Dog,
“Science is science.” It’s a good thing no one has ever questioned “science” or “accepted doctrine” before, or wait…
I disagree with you completely. Are you saying the best way for me to know what is right for MY body, is to not experiment with nutrition, but to simply listen to nutritional science?
The problem with your theory is that there is NO common ground in nutrition/food science. You could find a peer-reviewed study to make a point of anything. You could also find another that says, and proves, the exact opposite. This isn’t solving mathematical proofs we are talking about here. The human body has many, many variables, and the ONLY person who knows what is best for it, is you.
First of all, testing your temperature under your arm pit is a rather ineffective way of testing your body temperature. Secondly, the body temperature varies quite a lot each day, in sort of a bell curve fashion, at least I have found that with my own body. This means that testing it once a day could also prove ineffective. And finally, your temperature is NOT controlled by your thyroid. It is controlled by your hypothalamus. Your hypothalamus regulates your internal body temperature through many different means. Only one of them is through the thyroid gland to release T3 or T4 hormones.
98.6 is not universal. Not even close. Some run high, some run low. Does this mean you have an under-active thyroid? No. It could mean many things, or it could mean nothing at all. What is more important is tracking a difference. It is more important to see, except in extreme situations, that your body temperature is going up or down, rather than where it is at. What if your thermometer is a bit off? Are you going to depend your entire results on some thermometer? This is why it makes more sense to track the difference because then your instrument is inconsequential.

I agree with Chris. 98.6 is an average and it could have nothing to do with the thyroid. however, I will make not of the hypothalamus/thyroid dispute. your hypothalamus is what makes the temperature go up or down in your body but it is not the thermometer. as Chris said, it has a few different systems with which it can manage this temperature. The hypothalamus is kinda like the big cheese, it gets results from several different areas and then makes a call on whether to raise or lower the body temp. the thyroid is the most common gland that it uses to do this. However, I do not think Chris’s body temp is low enough to suggest anything wrong, a degree up or down from 98.6 is not startling and is quite normal, if it is indeed normal. I have talked at length with Chris about this before.
My own body temperature on any given day is around 99.3 or so. Given that this is my average and has been so since I was around 10, and that it is not above a degree above the average, it is perfectly normal. perhaps it has to do with metabolism. A metabolism that is very quick in that it uses the energy it gets very quickly could produce excess body heat. Perhaps Chris just has a very efficient or slower metabolism, resulting in lower body temperature.
I think a better question to ask is this: Chris, are you some sort of reptile, like a lizard or something? you know, one of those cold blooded creatures that has such a slow metabolism that it cannot produce enough body heat to keep itself warm so it must use the sun to warm itself, or some sort of geothermal heat source. This would make you an ectothermic creature and being that we all think your a person, that could really be frightening. although, perhaps i could use that to my advantage when we run a marathon. cold blooded creatures are not endurance athletes so yay for me!

If I had such a slow enough metabolism that you would consider me ectothermic, wouldn’t I have the most incredibly easy time building muscle? I could easily gain weight just from eating this raw foods diet!
Your higher temperature could also mean you are sick. There are people who have literally had a fever all their lives, or a cold. Some raw foodists talk about people starting a raw food diet to finally get rid of that cold that they have had for so long.
